Tom Jones turns 70

Tom Jones turns 70

Sir Tom Jones OBE is 70 years old today.

Thomas John Woodward from 57 Kingsland Terrace, Trefforest, Pontypridd, Wales nearly didn’t make it his teenage years. As a 12-year old he was struck down with tuberculosis and spent two-years in bed. He spent the time listening to music.

In 1957, at the age of 17, he married Melinda Trenchard and the couple had a son, Mark, who today manages Tom’s career. The couple have been married for over 50 years.

He changed his name to Tom Jones after a character in the Tony Richardson film and in 1964 had his first hit with 'It’s Not Unusual’.

A year later, he was the voice of the theme for the forth James Bond movie Thunderball.

1966 was another benchmark year. He released 'Green Green Grass of Home’. And for the rest of the 60s became one of the hottest nightclub acts in Las Vegas.

Jones went into TV in 1969. 'This Is Tom Jones’ ran from 1969-1971 and 'The Tom Jones Show’ aired in 1980 and 1981.

Last year, Jones moved back to the UK after living in Los Angeles since 1974.

His new album 'Praise and Blame’ will be released in July, 2010.
