Phew! Zac Efron Is Still So Totally Into Musicals (E! Online)

Phew! Zac Efron Is Still So Totally Into Musicals
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Zac Efron may be putting musicals behind him, but that doesn't mean he can't enjoy some show tunes every once in a while.

The 17 Again star took in a performance last night of Broadway's newest hit Rock of Ages. It's no Showboat, but it is a production with plenty of song and dance.

The show stars American Idol alum Constantine Maroulis as a wannabe rocker in 1987 Los Angeles and features the music of Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar and Twisted Sister...

Efron attended the musical with his father and younger brother after a day of promoting and doing press for 17 Again. (He did Letterman and introduced a screening of the movie hosted by Seventeen magazine, natch, among other things.)

"He was very, very nice," a fellow theatergoer tells me. "He went backstage and everyone wanted a picture with him."

Maroulis even joked that Efron will probably play his part if the show ever becomes a movie.

We don't think Zac would have any problem growing out his own locks for the perfect hair-band 'do. Have ya seen the new cover of GQ?

CALABASAS, Calif. – Authorities have arrested a camouflage-wearing, camera-toting woman they say was caught peeking into Britney Spears' windows.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested Miranda Tozier-Robbins on Thursday morning after security guards stopped her at Spears' suburban Calabasas home. Deputies say the 26-year-old was issued a citation for trespassing and disorderly conduct and released.

The incident happened hours before Spears was scheduled to perform the first of two shows this week in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old singer's whereabouts at the time of the incident are unknown. The sheriff's department said it did not know, and an e-mail sent to Spears' publicist was not immediately returned.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said it was unclear what the woman was up to. Jail records did not indicate whether Tozier-Robbins has an attorney.

Spears recently moved from her hilltop home in Los Angeles. Her former home was prone to spying by the paparazzi, who occasionally staked out a fire access road to try to get shots of the 27-year-old.

NEW YORK – "American Idol" tried to end on time Tuesday, enacting a format that only allowed two judges to review a singer.

Host Ryan Seacrest explained: "We're working in teams tonight, so we make it in on time."

Judge Simon Cowell said they had to do it that way because fellow female panelists Paula Abdul and Kara Dioguardi talked too much last week

Still, the popular Fox talent contest ran three minutes over schedule.

Last Tuesday's show ran over by eight minutes. Judges did not have time to comment on Adam Lambert's rendition of "Mad World."

LA jury convicts Phil Spector in murder of actress (AP)

LA jury convicts Phil Spector in murder of actress
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Two trials involving one legendary music producer. The first jury couldn't reach an unanimous decision, but the second found Phil Spector guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson.

Six years after Clarkson was found dead in the foyer of Spector's mansion, the diminutive 69-year-old now finds himself in a Los Angeles jail cell after he was convicted on Monday. His sentencing is scheduled for May 29 where he faces at least 18 years to life in prison barring a successful appeal.

Spector, wearing one of his signature suits with a long black coat, red tie and red handkerchief, had no obvious reaction. His 28-year-old wife, Rachelle, sobbed as the verdict was announced. Spector was led out of the courtroom by sheriff's deputies and remanded to jail immediately.

"He took it very stoically," defense attorney Doron Weinberg said later. "He wanted to know what is next."

The jury forewoman, who spoke later, also wept. She recounted the pressure of deciding the fate of another person.

"It just is a painful decision," she said. "For anybody in our shoes, you have no idea. It's tough to be on a jury."

The murder case was a flash from Hollywood's distant past, a reminder of the 1960s when Spector reigned as the hit maker supreme with such songs as the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" and the Ronettes' classic, "Be My Baby."

The 40-year-old Clarkson, star of the 1985 cult film "Barbarian Queen," died of a gunshot fired in her mouth as she sat in Spector's mansion in February 2003. She met Spector only hours earlier at her job as a nightclub hostess. In one of many ironies of the case, she had no idea of his fame. Prosecutors argued Spector had a history of threatening women with guns when they tried to leave his presence.

The defense claimed she was despondent over her fading career and killed herself.

Spector's chauffeur, the key witness, said he heard a gunshot, then saw Spector emerge holding a gun and heard him say: "I think I killed somebody."

The first jury deadlocked 10-2, favoring conviction in 2007. This time, jurors spent about 30 hours in deliberations before finding Spector guilty. They had the option of choosing involuntary manslaughter, but did not do so. The panel also found Spector personally used a firearm in committing a crime.

"It feels fantastic, this is the type of day prosecutors live for," said Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson, who summed up Spector's motive for killing Clarkson in one word: "Rage."

Clarkson's mother and sister attended with their lawyer, who said they would not personally comment because they now face resolution of their civil damage suit against Spector.

"The family is pleased that the jury rejected distortions of Lana Clarkson's life," said attorney John Taylor.

Prosecutors, haunted by the acquittals of stars such as O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake and Michael Jackson, at first seemed invested in making Spector the first showbiz star to be convicted in a major criminal case. But after the first trial ended in a deadlock, public interest faded. The second six-month trial was played out in a sparsely populated courtroom with few members of the media present.

LOS ANGELES – Kanye West's arraignment on misdemeanor charges has been delayed until May.

Lawyers for the rapper and his road manager were granted a delay to enter pleas until May 20 during a brief hearing Monday afternoon.

West, who is not required to attend, was scheduled to be arraigned on three misdemeanor charges filed as result of a scuffle with a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport on Sept. 11.

Video shot by celebrity gossip Web site TMZ showed West breaking a photographer's flash. His manager is accused of breaking the paparazzo's camera and TMZ's video camera.

West's attorney, Blair Berk, told a court commissioner that Monday was the first time she had been allowed to review the police report and she is waiting for prosecutors to turn over any additional evidence they have.

Stevie Nicks Skewers Lindsay: Get a Grip
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – As if Lindsay Lohan wasn't having a rough enough week already.

Fresh off her breakup from Samantha Ronson, her reported snubbing by Nicole Richie and Drea de Matteo and threats that she may be faced with a restraining order, she's now taking heat from the unlikeliest of Hollywood mean girls: Stevie Nicks.

The 60-year-old Fleetwood Mac singer lashed out at the 22-year-old in an interview with The New York Times. Nicks was asked about long-simmering reports that the redhead-once-more would like to buy the rights to the rocker's life and portray the singer on film.

"Over my dead body," Nicks said.

Why?

"She needs to stop doing drugs and get a grip. Then maybe we'll talk," explained Nicks, herself a recovering addict.

Guess Nicks isn't a fan of Method acting…or keeping track of her own quotes.

Two years ago, the rocker publicly praised Lohan—albeit in a backhanded sort of way—by saying she was more concerned about fellow wild childBritney Spears' behavior than the budding thesp's, saying, "I think Lindsay is a serious actress."

My, how times change.

Jared Leto Gives More Than 30 Seconds to Rescued Kids
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Jared Leto wants kids in need to have more than a so-called life.

The actor-musician and his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, on Friday opened up their recording session in the Hollywood Hills to boys and girls who were rescued from prostitution by the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Children of the Night.

COTN, which counts Hugh Hefner and the Johnny Carson Foundation among its biggest contributors, has aided more than 10,000 youngsters between the ages of 11 and 17 since its founding 30 years ago by Dr. Lois Lee.

Leto recently visited the 24-bed facility/school/counseling center and, after sitting down with some of the residents, was compelled to give back.

"After meeting all of the wonderful people at COTN and hearing about their enthusiasm for art and music, I invited them to join us in the studio for a day while we make our next record," Leto said in a statement to E! News this week. "We are looking forward to sharing this creative time with them on Friday, April 10th."

30 Seconds to Mars is currently at work on its third album. Next up for Leto on the big screen is the sci-fi drama Mr. Nobody.

NEW YORK – "South Park" may have accomplished the impossible — getting Kanye West to check his ego.

The Comedy Central show skewered the famously self-important rapper on its show Wednesday night, painting him as a narcissistic figure so out of touch with reality he couldn't even take a (very politically incorrect) joke.

West's love of himself and his work has been almost as integral to his image as his music: Just last year, he told The Associated Press that he was the "voice of this generation." Also recently, he was quoted as saying his greatest regret was not being able to see himself perform live.

Yet, on his blog Thursday, West appeared chastened, and ready to turn over a new leaf.

In typical all-caps mode, he wrote: "SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT'S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER."

West said that he started stroking his ego long ago to build up his self esteem — but he now realizes he needs to "GET PAST MYSELF."

In the self-reflective post, he said that people won't take him seriously if he keeps it up (perhaps referring to his well-documented meltdowns at awards shows when he didn't win what he expected).

"I JUST WANT TO BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM," he said.

And perhaps to show that he's really serious about making that change, he provided a link to one of the most biting moments from the "South Park" show, and thanked the writers as well.

Country star Joe Nichols plans Broadway debut
(AP)

NEW YORK – Country music singerJoe Nichols has his sights set on Broadway, perhaps as soon as early 2010.

Producer Randall L. Wreghitt says the four-time Grammy nominee will star in a stage version of the hit 1992 movie "Pure Country," which featured George Strait and Lesley Ann Warren. Wreghitt says further casting for the musical is now under way, as is the process of securing the remainder of the show's financing.

The movie has been adapted for the stage by Peter Masterson and will have a score by Steve Dorff, who wrote songs for the movie, including two number-one country singles, "Heartland" and "I Cross My Heart." Both will be in the stage version.

Diane DeGarmo Stalker Denied Down Under
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – And Diana DeGarmo thought Simon Cowell was bad...

An Australian woman accused of cyber-stalking the American Idol runner-up has been denied bail by a Down Under judge.

Tanye Maree Quattrocchi, 23, was convicted of blackmailing and stalking DeGarmo in May 2007 and initially sentenced to community service, but the woman was locked up three months ago after hacking into DeGarmo's MySpace account a whopping 700 times between May 2008 and January, according to the Melbourne Herald Sun.

Quattrocchi had been hoping to get out for Easter. Her mother told the court she would quit her job and place her daughter under virtual house arrest to ensure she avoided the Internet and complied with the terms of her probation.

But the plea fell on deaf ears as Deputy Chief Magistrate Dan Muling ruled that it was highly likely Quattrocchi would continue to harass the Idol star and her family.

Quattrocchi will remain holed up in jail until her next hearing, set for May 11. A new trial is scheduled for October.

DeGarmo finished second in the third season of Fox's American Idol, losing out to Fantasia Barrino.

Malawi Court Denies Mercy to Madonna; Singer Files Appeal (E! Online)

Malawi Court Denies Mercy to Madonna; Singer Files Appeal
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – This time around, Madonna isn't getting into the adoption groove.

Despite backing from the government and assurances from her lawyer that it was a done deal, a Malawi court today shot down the Material Mom's request to adopt a second child from the African nation on a technicality. The judge chalked up the denial to Madonna not meeting a simple residency requirement—a would-be parent must live in the country 18 to 24 months ahead of time.

"I must have to decline to grant the application to Madonna," Judge Esme Chombo wrote in a ruling following the closed-door proceeding. The pop icon was not present for the ruling.

But Madonna, who sought custody of 3-year-old orphan Chifundo "Mercy" James, isn't taking no for answer.

"I just filed the notice of appeal [with the Supreme Court] on instructions from my client," her lawyer, Alan Chinula, later announced.

Chombo apparently stuck to the letter of the law in reaching her decision—a law that was skirted back in 2006, when Madonna and then-husband Guy Ritchie adopted David Banda, now 3, amid controversy over calls of favoritism and rule bending.

Critics voiced similar concerns leading up to today's ruling.

Chombo noted that the 50-year-old entertainer divides her time miles away from Malawi between homes in New York and London.

The judge expressed concern that, by allowing Madonna to bypass their own requirements and "removing the very safeguard that is supposed to protect our children, the courts by their pronouncements could actually facilitate trafficking of children by some unscrupulous individuals."

She also argued that Madonna's good works with the orphanage will still benefit Mercy since she currently resides there.

"It is evident that Chifundo James no longer is subject to the conditions of poverty at her place of birth," the judge said.

Madonna arrived in Malawi last week to visit her orphanage, spend time with Mercy and take young David to see his biological father. She filed her adoption request on Monday, stating that the girl's grandmother was unable to properly care for her and seeking custody to give her a better life free from "hardship and emotional trauma."

LOS ANGELES – Rapper Coolio has pleaded not guilty to drug possession and battery charges.

The 45-year-old rapper, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey, entered his plea during an arraignment in Los Angeles on Friday.

He was arrested last month at Los Angeles International Airport, and later charged with felony cocaine possession and battery and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. Coolio allegedly grabbed a screener's arm to prevent a search of his luggage.

The "Gangsta's Paradise" rapper remains free on bail and has been ordered to return to court on April 20.

Megan Joy flaps her way off American Idol
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Megan Joy says she was just being goofy and showing her love of birds when she flapped her way across the "American Idol" stage. "I love birds and bird noises," said Joy, who was eliminated from the TV show Wednesday. "I just decided that if I'm goin' out, I'm goin' out with a bang and I'm just going to be myself. So I ... flew the whole time."

Joy created the most bizarre moment of the night — if not the season — with her flapping and squawking.

She told a teleconference on Thursday that fellow low-ranking contestants Anoop Desai and Allison Iraheta had promised to make birdlike sounds for her if she were voted off.

"I'm always just making noises and animal noises and they were like, `Meg, if you go tonight, we're going to caw for you and support you.' So I was like, `Don't you forget to caw, Anoop.'"

The tattooed, 23-year-old single mother from Sandy, Utah, said that she plans to add to her body art with an ink version of the good luck ring she wore for the singing contest.

Joy received the fewest number of viewer votes for her version of Bob Marley's "Turn Your Lights Down Low." Eight finalists remain in the competition.

She said she has no regrets and figured she would be eliminated this week. In the future, she'd consider doing voice work and whatever life throws her way. But for now, Joy is itching to spend time with her toddler son, Ryder.

"As sad as I am that I'm leaving and I'm done with the show, there is a very big part of me that cannot wait to see my son," she said. "And it's been too long. I'm ready to hold him in my arms again."

Hannah Montana Director Also Says Sequel Unlikely (E! Online)

Hannah Montana Director Also Says Sequel Unlikely
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Miley Cyrus isn't the only one saying we probably won't be seeing a sequel to the not-even-released yet Hannah Montana movie.

The musical movie's director, Peter Chelsom, also predicts this is it for Miley Stewart/HannahMontana on the big screen.

"I don't know what else there would be to say," Chelsom told me yesterday. "I suppose there's a chance, but I have a feeling Miley wants to do other stuff."

That's not the only thing Chelsom had to say about Ms. Cyrus…

Chelsom actually didn't know who Cyrus or Hannah Montana were when his agent asked if he'd be interested in directing the flick. But then he caught an appearance by the then 15-year-old on Oprah. "I was blown away," he said. "I just thought, you know there is no way this girl shouldn't be ranked with Shirley Temple or Judy Garland."

Later, Cyrus insisted he come see her in concert in Miami. "I couldn't believe it," he remembered. "It was like watching an evening with Barbra Streisand."

He continued, "She was 15 for the whole making of the movie…Was Barbra doing that at 15? I don't think so."

Cyrus wasn't the only one to impress Chelsom.

Taylor Swift has a singing cameo in the movie. "She only did a day, but I've made a very big mental check to work with her again," Chelsom said. "If she walked in the room right now, I would say, 'Can we meet and talk about films you might want to do?' I don't have anything concrete, but I would be very keen to do something with her."

And then there's Tyra Banks. The supermodel talk-show host plays herself in a scene that ends with her and Hannah having a pratfall-filled knockdown wrestling match over a pair of shoes. "They really went for it," Chelsom said. "I was worried that Tyra was going to get hurt, but she made it very clear that she wanted to leap around. But we were good because we had padding...everywhere."

Crawford Chasing After Footloose Remake? (E! Online)

Crawford Chasing After Footloose Remake?
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Can Chace Crawford sing and dance?

We may find out soon enough.

I just got word that the Gossip Girl star tested this weekend for the Zac Efron-ditched remake of Footloose.

"He did really well," a source tells me.

Hmmm, this could sorta be like art imitating life...

Soon after word got out that Zefron was singing a different tune about taking on the role originated by Kevin Bacon, Crawford's name was popping up on entertainment and gossip blogs and websites as the top suggested man to replace him.

Despite Efron's change of heart, Paramount Studios said director Kenny Ortega and ber-producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan are still committed to updating the classic '80s musical for a new generation of moviegoers.

The remake was put on the fast track in the fall for a 2010 release after Efron & Co. hit box-office gold with the third installment of the High School Musical movie franchise.

Whether Crawford has the musical chops to pull it off remains to be seen (and heard). But we think Crawford could easily fill Bacon's shoes.

Reps for Crawford and the movie did not immediately comment.
