Gruff Rhys presents Separado!
Super Furry Animals main man and solo star Gruff Rhys presents Separado! a psychedelic, Westerntinged documentary film of his unlikely international road-trip. Four years in the making, the film of this unique personal odyssey starring, written and soundtracked by Gruff Rhys is now complete.
The spark for the adventure chronicled in Separado! originated from Gruffs childhood fascination with horse riding, poncho-wearing singer/guitarist Rene Griffiths and his Latin infused Welsh love songs. Years later, Gruff investigates further to discover a deep-seated family schism, fatal horse race, little-known Welsh colony in Patagonia and that Rene is, in fact, a not so distant relative.
Gruff combines the ensuing quest to find Rene with a solo tour adding a rockumentary element to the magical realism of the film and taking him from North Wales deep in to South America. As well as some unorthodox live dates a stop-off in Brazil leads to a marathon recording session with local musical freedom fighter and ex TV repairman Tony Gattora; inventor of the part-drum machine, part-guitar 'Gattora instrument.
Gruff Rhys is most widely known for being one of the musical masterminds withinWelsh band Super Furry Animals. The brilliantly maverick songwriter and vocalists discography also includes sublime solo output and the Mercury Music Prize nominated Neon Neon concept album based around the colourful life of John DeLorean. More recently Gruff founded his own 'Irony Bored record label and released Cate Le Bons widely acclaimed debut album.
Micro-budget epic Separado! has been partly funded by the Film Agency For Wales and Sony Entertainment, and produced by Catryn Ramasuts ie ie Productions. Gruff was accompanied throughout his road-trip by cameraman and director Dylan Goch. The recently completed film will receive its premier at Soundtrack: The International Film and Music Festival for Wales on 19th November. Further screenings are planned and everyone involved hopes to bring Separado! to a wider audience over the coming months.
