X Factor Review week 2

Email this story Printable version After the brilliant new series opener last week, the second episode of the X Factor had a lot to live up to. After a brief montage of last week's blockbusting opener, along comes 45 year old Johnny Robinson. Image the scene, Steptoe and Son meets X factor. Onto the stage he walked, to be met by lots of muffled sniggers and side glances. Perfect X Factor cannon fodder. But Jolly Johnny gave us a true 'Susan Boyle' moment. The guy was likeable, polite, and yes he could sing. Maybe not a winner but a decent candidate and I hope he goes far, the competition needs more people like him around. After the break, we had a, 'love in the air' montage, which even featured the first ever X Factor proposal. (I'm off to buy my hat after writing this.) Then we met Derry, Kelly Rowland's number one fan. He was a great singer, and could hold a good tune, the kind of guy you could see in a boy band. I just wish they hadn't gone on and on about his love for Kelly, it overshadowed his brilliant voice. Of the singers that followed, Joseph Castle stood out for me and I hope we see more of him at bootcamp. Great vocal. Then for the first ever time, the X Factor auditions went to Liverpool, the home of the Beatles, don't you know? After the big build about Liverpool producing outstanding musicians, you just knew the first act would be bad.and they were. Sorry Mark, but thanks for coming. So after the false start, Liverpool needed a top singer. They got one in the shape baseball shoe wearing, Craig Colton. Craig's mum and dad, (Peter Kaye??) were in the audience, but were surprised when Craig walked out onto the stage for his audition, as he had kept it quiet from them. They were so proud and Mrs Midas even shed a little tear!! Biscuit worker Craig, gave a great vocal. Even 'Mrs M' said 'crumbs he is good' (sorry everyone). Craig was good, but he never 'wowed' me in a 'he could be a Midas act' way. Saying that though, let's hope we still see him at judges' houses. Now on to the groups. They were given their first montage of the new series. Standing out for all the wrong reasons were Beyonce and her husband! The Duos were so bad Gary had to ask, 'Did you rehearse that or was that the rehearsal?' My favourite Gary Barlow quote of the week. Next up was the band The Keys. A brilliant harmony group who stood out a country mile and should be at the live shows. Something for the ladies?! These lads are definitely ones to watch. The final audition of the night was Misha Bryan from Manchester. I had the opportunity of seeing Misha's live audition. She rocked the crowd then and you could see it all happening again on the TV. This confirmed something to me.This girl is a star and I love her. One of the best auditions I have ever seen on the X Factor; it is up there with when I first saw 'Midas' act, Leona Lewis. Mishas' vocal was note perfect and her confidence oozed from the stage in to the crowd. Kelly Rowland spent most of Misha's audition on her feet and if Kelly likes you, you have a chance. I will lay my cards on the table and say that even after just two shows Misha is a potential Midas act. If she does not at least get to the final 3, I will be shocked. Before I go, a quick mention for ITV2's the Xtra Factor, which is being superbly presented by Olly Murs and Caroline Flack. On this show we met Roger Boyd, a likeable guy who gave us a great Meatloaf moment. The crowd loved it and Roger marched on to boot camp. Good Luck mate. 2011 Mathew Street Festival offers more than just a 'tribute' show

Email this story Printable version The 2011 Mathew Street Festival takes place this coming bank holiday weekend with bands from all over the world standing alongside the best Merseyside music talent. The two-day festival on Sun 28 and Mon 29 August will see around 250,000 people take to the streets and bars in the city centre for one of the highlights of the city's musical calendar. 2011 will be the first year there has not been a designated Beatles Stage though, as ever, there will be a strong Beatles and Merseybeat presence. While the majority of outdoor stages will stick with the traditional tribute performances, the 'Made In Liverpool' stage, in Williamson Square, will this year feature some of the finest bands and artists from the area. Sunday's highlights include Super Cannes and Fly With Vampires who share the bill with local favourites Amsterdam and China Crisis. Monday sees Man Get Out open proceedings before Stealing Sheep and The Red Suns get their chance. Also on Monday, Wavertree singer songwriter Delta Maid will no doubt pull in a big crowd. The festival is not just about the outdoor stages though with many of the city's bars and live venues taking part in the Mathew Street Fringe. Starting on Friday 26th with shows at likes of Bumper and Zanzibar the Fringe will highlight the best of Merseyside's unsigned talent. Local rockers Kaylide are worth checking out at the O2 Academy while Liverpool Acoustic offer a more chilled out vibe at the View Two Gallery in Mathew St. Radio Merseyside's Dave Monks will be hosting a BBC Live Session at Liverpool ONE on Sat 27th while over at The Bluecoat 'Above the Beaten Track' festival brings 8 hours of Honky Tonk and Americana to the city centre. The Planet Boat in Canning Dock will host a stellar line-up over three days (Sat-Mon). Party late into the evening with The Bo Weevils, The City Walls, The New Caldera and KOF among the many local heroes signed up to play the FREE stage. For the ravers out there, old skool specialists Retro-Trax will be taking over the O2 Academy on Sun 28th with special guest the legendary Marshall Jefferson on the decks. Rihanna denies sex tape

Email this story Printable version Rihanna has denied that she made a sex tape despite claims to the contrary. Adult company Hustler have insisted they are in possession of a tape showing the S&M singer and rapper J-Cole. In a statement to RadarOnline, the company claims to have an intimate video of the two performers but have not indicated when or where it was taken. 'Hustler are in possession of the Rihanna and J-Cole tape,' a representative told the site. 'We have seen it and we do not know what we are going to do with it yet.' The company refused to reveal any further details of what the tape contains, but are adamant that it is real. But a source close to Rihanna has denied such a video exists. 'Rihanna is surprised because there is no sex tape,' they said. J-Cole was the opening act for Rihanna during her 2011 Loud tour and she also made a cameo in his music video Can't Get Enough. It's a good week for the singer, who has been named the most powerful female celebrity in the world by Forbes. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey comes in at 14, while the top spot goes to German chancellor Angela Merkel. Amy Winehouse toxicology results revealed

The British songstress was found dead at her North London home last month at the age of 27. She had a highly-publicised battle with drinks and drugs, and speculation had been rife about the cause of her death since her tragic passing. The Winehouse family released a statement today about the results of tests following Amy's post mortem. "Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death. Results indicate that alcohol was present but it cannot be determined as yet if it played a role in her death,' it read. "The family would like to thank the police and coroner for their continuing thorough investigations and for keeping them informed throughout the process. They await the outcome of the inquest in October." A post-mortem examination after the singer was found proved inconclusive and an inquest was opened and adjourned with no cause of death given for the star. A funeral was held for Amy at Edgwarebury Cemetery in north London shortly after her body was found. At the sad event, her father Mitch Winehouse told mourners that Amy was the happiest she had been in a long time in the weeks leading up to her untimely death. "She was the happiest she has been for years. We all remember that great night at the 100 Club on Oxford Street, her voice was good, her wit and timing were perfect. She told me that she had 'thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed herself,'' he said. 'But knowing she wasn't depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, it makes us all feel better." Lil Wayne attacked by pepper spray

The rapper is currently performing concerts in North America on his I Am Still Music Tour. Yesterday Lil Wayne took to the stage in Montreal, Canada. Following his concert Lil Wayne hosted an after-party at club La Mouche. Hours into the festivities someone crept into a back room and released pepper spray into the air ducts. The noxious gas seeped into the room and everyone at the party, including Lil Wayne, was evacuated soon after. No one is reported to have been injured in the incident. '[Lil Wayne is] OK and gearing for his next stop in Toronto,' a representative for the star told TMZ. Lil Wayne still has love for Canada despite the incident. He very much enjoyed performing in Montreal, expressing his satisfaction with the show and the city on Twitter. 'Montreal was simply the best. Nuff said (sic)!' Lil Wayne tweeted. Aguilera confirmed for Jackson tribute

Organisers of the Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert have promised more acts will be revealed later this year. The show is due to take place on October 8 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, and is being backed by members of Michael's family. Motown superstar Smokey Robinson also appears on the bill, as well as British singer Leona Lewis. "We're delighted that such exciting and globally recognised acts have joined the line-up to pay tribute to a music legend," said Chris Hunt, president of concert promoter Global Live Events. Michael's mother Katherine Jackson is set to reveal more information about the event in a CNN interview scheduled for August 15. Several of Michael's brothers will be taking to the stage to perform, along with 3T ' which consists of Tito Jackson's sons. Rockers Alien Ant Farm ' who enjoyed success with their 2001 version of Smooth Criminal ' and British boy band JLS are also on the bill. The event will raise money for charities including AIDS Project Los Angeles. It has also been reported the concert will be broadcast live at large venues across the US. 'We want to make clear that this does not reflect the position of the entire family," the pair said in a joint statement last month. "While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honours our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death." Billy Grammer passes away at 85

Email this story Printable version Billy Grammer, who scored on both the country and pop charts with Gotta Travel On, passed away Wednesday morning after a long illness. He was 85. Grammer was a multi-instrumentalist even as a teen, playing guitar, fiddle and mandolin. After getting out of the service, he had trouble finding work so he decided to try music, auditioning for Connie Gay's Radio Ranch in Arlington, VA. In 1955, Gay suggested to Jimmy Dean that he try Grammer out on his television show and Billy joined the studio band for a number of big artists including Hackshaw Hawkins and Clyde Moody. By 1958, he was ready to strike out on his own, so he formed a band and was signed to Monument Records. In early 1959, he hit the top five on both the country and pop charts and the top 15 in R&B with Gotta Travel On, which would become the biggest hit of his career. Grammer never made it to the top ten again (his other semi big hit was the original version of Detroit City, called I Wanna Go Home) even though he continued recording throughout the rest of the decade. His prowess on guitar led to a number of albums that were instrumental based and, in 1965, he co-founded RG&G Company (later the Grammer Guitar Company) which made the Grammer guitar until 1970. Through the late-60's and early-70's, Grammer thrived on studio work for a number of Nashville's biggest artist, all the while playing as a regular at the Grand Ole Opry. Billy gave the invocation at the dedication of the new Opry house in 1974 and was inducted into the Illinois Country Music Hall of Fame in 1990. On February 27, 2009, he made an appearance at the Opry in celebration of his fifty years as a member. Later in life, Grammer suffered from eye disease that eventually left him blind. Coldplay reveal album details

The British band also revealed their fifth studio record will be released by Parlophone Records on October 24. The record has been produced by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, with additional composition from Brian Eno. "Hello everybody, we have finished our new album... we hope you like it and we hope you are well,' the band posted on their official website. Last year, frontman Chris Martin revealed the new album title would comprise of two words, with the first word beginning with M. Mylo Xyloto - pronounced my-lo zy-letoe ' will be released in digital, CD and vinyl formats. A special limited edition pop-up version will also be available, featuring a hardback book of graffiti art designed by David A Carter. It will also contain excerpts from the studio diary, photographs and passages from the group's personal notebooks. Police ‘review Winehouse footage’

The singer was found dead in her home in Camden, London, last month. She was 27 and a post-mortem was inconclusive so cause of death won't be known until toxicology tests return in a few weeks. Her father Mitch says she gave up alcohol three weeks before she died, with the family believing she either had a seizure or heart attack. Mitch claims she was at home playing drums the evening prior to her death, but other people have said she was out in Camden. Police are now checking CCTV in an effort to find out the truth. 'There are enough cameras in the area to get a picture of her movements,' a source told British newspaper The Daily Mirror. 't's a painstaking operation which involves going through tens of hours of footage.' Shortly after Amy died a source claimed she'd bought drugs including ketamine and ecstasy the evening before her passing. Then earlier this week, Tony Azzopardi alleged she'd given him £1,200 to buy cocaine and heroin. He met with police for half an hour yesterday, and is due to be interviewed again today. Tony first made the claims in a newspaper, explaining he met the singer via her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil. He insists he spoke out so the star's family 'know the truth'. Mitch, his wife Jane and Amy's brother Alex have decided to take some time out from the spotlight to cope with her death. They are going abroad for ten days to deal with their loss with Amy's partner Reg Traviss ' who it's understood she was secretly engaged to ' also taking the trip. It coincides with a family wedding, and the group think getting out of the country is just what they need. 'The family feel they want to grieve properly out of the limelight,' a source told British newspaper The Sun. 'They will celebrate Amy's life and share their most treasured stories of her.' According to the band's representative Caleb was suffering from "heat exhaustion and dehydration' which had caused his "vocal chords to seize". Jared has expressed his fears about the band on social-networking site Twitter, hinting that the issues run deeper. "I know you guys aren't stupid. I can't lie.
