NEW YORK – A makeup artist and a fashion stylist claim in coordinated lawsuits that they got ugly treatment from Queen Latifah when she cheated them out of $1 million.

Celebrity cosmetology consultant Roxanna Floyd says she lost $700,000 when the rapper-actress failed to pay her for work she did between July 2005 and February 2008.

In a separate lawsuit, celebrity fashion stylist Susan Moses said she was cheated of $300,000 during the same period.

The lawsuits were filed Monday in federal court in Manhattan.

Amanda Silverman, a spokeswoman for the actress whose roles in movies include "Hairspray" and "Mad Money," says the lawsuits have no merit, but she can't comment more on pending litigation.

Jonas Brothers Making Up for Movie Disappointment (E! Online)

Jonas Brothers Making Up for Movie Disappointment
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Perhapsthat poor showing in the box office didn't signify the Jonas Brothers were done after all.

The reason for the Disney megagroup's poor turnout for their movie, Jonas Brothers: 3D Concert Experience, is becoming rather apparent. Their tour—you know, thething where you pay a lot more but you get to see them in person in a giant room with tens of thousands of other screaming fans—has sold out huge arena venues in many major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, New Orleans, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. In fact, the trio sold more than 800,000 total tickets when the shows went on sale this weekend.

Jordin Sparks, as well as Honor Society, are joining the boy band for the North American leg of the tour, while Demi Lovato will help them kick off the festivities in Latin America in May.

"Ticket sales for this tour have been phenomenal," says Jason Garner, chief executive officer for global music for Live Nation. "It's clear to us that Jonas Brothers are a true global touring powerhouse."

The good news follows the siblings' big win for Favorite Music Group at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards Saturday evening.

Madonna at Malawi court; adoption on the docket (AP)

Madonna at Malawi court; adoption on the docket
(AP)

LILONGWE, Malawi – Madonna appeared in court Monday in the capital of Malawi, where she is expected to adopt a 4-year-old girl as her second child from the southern African nation.

The American pop star was dressed in a black skirt and black high heels and entered the court house in Lilongwe through a back door.

The one adoption case on the court docket lists only the child's name — Chifundo James. The case is expected to be heard in a closed session before Judge Esme Chombo.

A welfare official and another person involved in the case say Madonna hopes to adopt a 4-year-old girl whose mother died soon after her birth. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

Madonna has not commented on the adoption and did not speak to reporters Monday morning.

She adopted her son David, 3, in Malawi last year. Children's advocacy groups have accused her of wielding her immense wealth and influence to circumvent Malawian law requiring an 18- to 24-month assessment period before adoption.

Madonna first traveled to Malawi in 2006 while doing charity work and filming a documentary on the devastating poverty and AIDS crisis here. Her Raising Malawi organization, founded in 2006, raises funds to fight poverty by providing food, shelter, education and health care for children here.

The U.N. estimates that half of the 1 million Malawian children with one or no parents was orphaned by AIDS, and that the virus that causes AIDS has infected 14 percent of adults here.

Chris Brown, Rihanna were no-shows at Kids Choice
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Chris Brown and Rihanna, who added star power to last year's Kids' Choice Awards, were conspicuously absent at the annual event on Saturday.

Brown, who was nominated for favorite male singer and favorite song for "Kiss Kiss," withdrew his name from Kids' Choice contention after he was arrested Feb. 8 for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Rihanna, a fellow Kids' Choice nominee for favorite female singer and favorite song for "Don't Stop the Music," was also a no-show.

"For them not to be here is very sad. I was looking forward to seeing them here," rapper Soulja Boy, who is a friend of the pop stars, said from the orange carpet.

"Right now, it's a sad situation. And it's very touchy. I'm just .... it just shocked me when it happened," he added.

Soulja Boy said he's spoken with Brown over the phone and that the 19-year-old R&B singer is "doing OK."

"Yeah, right now, it's a delicate time," he added. "You know, the court date is coming up. I hope that they both get through it in a positive way."

Brown, who has been charged by Los Angeles prosecutors with felony assault and making criminal threats, is scheduled to be arraigned April 6.

Madonna Have Mercy? Adoption Hearing Set for Monday
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – If Madonna gets a judicial OK, her sonDavid will be getting a little sister.

A Malawi court has scheduled a hearing for Monday to take up the Material Mama's petition to add an orphaned girl to the brood.

The hearing was announceda day after officials in theAfrican nation confirmed the 50-year-old entertainer was seeking asecond adoption.

Also on Friday, the identity of the 4-year-old girl was confirmed.

"Her name is Mercy James from Mchinji Home of Hope orphanage. She has no father and mother—they both died. We finished the assessment yesterday in readiness for the courts next week," a spokesman forthe Ministry of Gender and Child Development told Reuters.

If all goes according to plan, Mercy will join 12-year-old Lourdes (Madonna's daughter with former flame Carlos Leon), 9-year-oldRocco (her biological son with Guy Ritchie) and 3-year-old David Banda, whom she and her filmmaker ex-hubby adopted two-and-a-half years ago after traveling to Malawi to help build an orphanage there.

Mercy hails from the same orphanage.

The "Causing a Commotion" singer is expected to arrive in Malawi with David sometime over the weekend and will reportedly take the boy to meet his biological father, Yohane Banda, while they're visiting.

Her publicist has declined to comment on the latest adoption news, but Madonna is hopingto avoid the controversy that eruptedlast time around, when various child advocacy groups accused her of using her superstar status to evade the nation's adoption laws.

Now a newly minted single mom with an extremely busy touring schedule, the "Sticky and Sweet" purveyor will be required to justify her filing before the court.

In an interview with Malawi's Nation newspaper earlier this month, Madonna was quoted as saying she'd only go through with it if she had the "support of the Malawian people and government."

LOS ANGELES – Some of Courtney Love's online rants are now in a Los Angeles court.

A fashion designer's libel and breach of contract lawsuit against the singer includes what she calls several "menacing and disturbing" statements posted on the Internet.

Austin, Texas-based Dawn Simorangkir (Sim-or-AHNG-ker), also known as Boudoir Queen, says Love never paid her for work done. She filed the lawsuit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The suit cites remarks from Love's Twitter and MySpace pages, and in the feedback section of Etsy.com. It said Love called Simorangkir a "nasty lying hosebag thief" and accused her of being a drug addict and a prostitute.

Phone messages left for Love's publicist Thursday and Friday were not immediately returned.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Rihanna's beatdown by Chris Brown not only caused headlines, now it's inspiring art.

L.A.-based pop artist Sham's new portrait of the "Disturbia" hitmaker is based on the now infamous police photo showing the singer bruised and bloodied.

But Sham's intent is not to raise awareness about, let's say, domestic violence. Instead, his reasons for creating the Andy Warhol-like piece—which is featured in the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery's new group show, Name That 'Toon, opening tonight in Hollywood—are quite simple…

"I thought the bruises in the police photo were interesting shapes to draw," he says. "And it was cool to color them pink and blue. Those are two of my favorite colors."

Um, OK.

The 24-inch by 36-inch piece was made by transferring custom colorized blow-ups of digital tracings of the police pic onto canvas.

"There is no message to any of my art," he says. "It's meant to look cool hanging on your wall and that's it! I'm not into deep meanings."

Hey, at least he's honest.

HOUSTON – Grammy-nominated singer Wayna has been arrested at a Houston airport after trying to get on a plane with a collapsible police baton that she uses while performing.

Wayna, whose real name is Woyneab Miraf Wondwossen, was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon Wednesday.

Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said Thursday that security guards at the checkpoint at Bush International Airport discovered the 24-inch baton in her carry-on bag.

Wondwossen, 35, was transported to the Houston jail and posted $5,000 bond.

Wayna released her second album, "Higher Ground," in 2008. One of the songs on the album is "Billy Club," a ballad about police abuse, and Wondwossen twirls and points the baton when she performs the song live.

American Idol drills down to 9 contestants
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Michael Sarver got a crude awakening Thursday night from his "American Idol" life.

The 27-year-old oil rig worker from Jasper, Texas, made his final plea by belting out "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," but it just wasn't slick enough for the judges to overrule the votes of viewers.

Sarver was also in the bottom two last week, and put on a consensus weak performance in Wednesday night's performance round. Even sugary-sweet Paula Abdul chimed in, comparing the 27-year-old oil rig worker from Jasper, Texas, to an old-school Vegas lounge act.

His unrefined reprisal of the Temptations classic didn't appear to tempt the judges to spend their one-time save of a low-vote getter. The four got their heads together for a moment, then Simon Cowell told the married father of two children: "Michael, you're going home. Sorry."

Matt Giraud, 23, of Kalamazoo, Mich., was the other bottom vote-getter, despite the judges' positive appraisal of his "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye.

Stevie Wonder kept the Motown mojo of this week's show going by singing a medley of his songs, energizing both the contestants — who were dancing and grooving along — and audience.

The nine contestants who remain on the Fox network's singing competition are Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Corkrey and Scott MacIntyre.

Fox pushed this week's "American Idol" broadcasts back a day to steer clear of President Obama's prime-time news conference on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Jennifer Hudson has spent the past few months recovering from the tragic murder of her mother, brotherand nephew. Now, both her personal life and her career are blossoming.

Wednesday night, the star returned to the place that first brought her into our living rooms, American Idol. Following the Motown-themed show, the season-three, seventh-place finisher—who famously went on to win a Grammy and an Oscar—taped a performance of her single "If This Isn't Love" to air on the show at a later date.

Following the performance, Hudson, whose tour alongside Robin Thicke kicks off on March 31, spilled a few beans to Ryan Seacrest. When asked about her engagement and upcoming nuptials to David Otunga, she admitted a date had been set.

"Yeah, but it's a secret," the 25-year-old singer said. "I can't tell anybody."

Hudson gushed a little further when she taped her Thursday-afternoon appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

After the two sang "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" from DreamGirls as part of the show's Bathroom Concert Series, the host asked about the happy couple.

"We're like big kids, so we like to ride bikes, and one thing I like to do is I put my dog in her little basket and put her on my back and then we ride the bike to the dog park," Hudson told her.

DeGeneres, as usual, had an appropriate engagement gift: a romantic bicycle built for two.

NEW YORK – Adam Lambert has showed his softer side on "American Idol," earning a standing ovation for his smooth performance of "The Tracks of My Tears."

Guest mentor Smokey Robinson, who originally performed the classic song with the Miracles, rose to his feet after watching the 26-year-old theater actor hit all the right notes during Wednesday's Motown-themed installment of the "Fox" singing competition.

Lambert, who's from Los Angeles, ditched his rocker duds for a sleek silver suit and smoothed his black hair back into an Elvis-style pompadour.

Judge Simon Cowell says Lambert delivered the night's best performance and became a star in his eyes. Fellow judge Kara Dioguardi agreed, saying Lambert showed "true artistry."

The Dead auctions front-row tickets for charity (AP)

The Dead auctions front-row tickets for charity
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – It was time, says The Dead's Bob Weir, to give charitable causes a boost while directing a kick to the hindquarters of ticket scalpers.

So he and his bandmates announced Tuesday they have held back some of the best seats for their forthcoming spring tour, and are putting them up for bid in an online auction.

Want to sit in the third row, center-stage-right, for the tour's opening show April 12 in Greensboro, N.C.? The bidding starts at $250 at charityfolks.com.

Proceeds will benefit a number of charities the group has supported for years, including its Rex Foundation, which was established by the Grateful Dead in 1983 and provides grants to support the arts, science, education and other causes.

"Needless to say, like any charity these days, their revenues are down right now. They're hurting," Weir said Tuesday in a phone interview. "We want to do what we can to keep these folks up and running and in business."

Successful bidders won't be able to collect their tickets until the day of a show to minimize scalping, Weir said.

Weir said he hoped the auction would raise at least $250,000. Other charities the group is supporting include the Further Foundation, which works for environmental and social causes; the Unbroken Chain Foundation, which supports community service projects; and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which is dedicated to protecting oceans and marine life.

Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann is an avid supporter of the latter.

"I live in Hawaii and right now it's humpback whale season and we see them here," he said by phone Tuesday. "At the rate they are being slaughtered for ocean fishing there won't be any left."

The group, which dropped Grateful from its name following the death of guitarist Jerry Garcia, is launching its first tour in five years with core surviving members Weir, Kreutzmann, drummer Mickey Hart and bassist Phil Lesh.

Kanye West: I'm Done Spazzing (E! Online)

Kanye West: Im Done Spazzing
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Kanye West is on the cover of April/May's Complex and this time it's really "some Benjamin Button's s--t." Photographed using the same technology as the Brad Pitt movie, Kanye was made up to look like a pasty robot because Kanye loves the future.

But even more bizarre than the photo shoot are the things Kanye says. The accompanying profile is full of quotes of Yeezy being level-headed, humble, self-aware and generally not an asshole. It really caught us off guard, considering he was just in Details saying, "I'm the f--king end-all, be-all of music" and "one of the greatest rappers in the world."

But it's cool if people want to change, so let's hearhis regrets overbeing a "cry-baby-ass bitch" on MTV and other over-the-top moments:

"I would never spaz on MTV the way I did before.I feel like there are people who have given a lot to me and I wasn't appreciative of them. MTV had a major part in making me, so how the hell could I ever come out of my mouth and dis them and just be like the cry-baby-ass bitch over one performance? How the hell is a 29-year-old grown ass man acting like a little bitch and getting all emotional? How spoiled can I get?"

Whoa, right? That actually makes sense and sounds reasonable. And it doesn't stop there; he's also very sorry for being arrogant and annoying at last year's Grammys:

"I look at my Grammy speech from last year and I cringe...Nobody got it and it made me look like a complete asshole, and it just confirmed that Kanye's arrogant and not appreciative. You should always be gracious in a situation like that because that's their show. You know, who the f--k am I to feel like I have rights to any extra time when it's their show?I came in as a bit of a hothead and now I'm completely respectful; I really have the opportunity to live my dreams out and have my Grammy moments and build a great relationship with these people. And I learned from that; I publicly apologized for it."

As he goes on to explain, when he stunts,he's just doing itto amuse us, which is actuallyreallysweet of him,"I'm here to entertain people and to be the one that does the crazy, bold stuff so they can live through me and get their mind off the recession and the war and whatever else is going on in the world."

And he's right, this less pretentious Kanye is entertaining only because it's so rare, but there's something amazing when crazy Kanye begs us to "Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me be great!!!" that we miss dearly. Not to worry, we're sure that he'll be back in no time.

Jonas Brothers: First Family Has VIP Pass for Life (E! Online)

Jonas Brothers: First Family Has VIP Pass for Life
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – We have a pretty good hunch where first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama will be on July 13—at Washington, D.C.'s Verizon Center for the Jonas Brothers concert.

Like no duh, right?

"Hopefully, the family will come out and watch the show," Kevin Jonas told us during a JoBros conference call this morning with reporters to talk about their upcoming world tour. "They're always invited."

The boys surprised the girls earlier this year when the group showed up at the White House to give them and some friends a private concert, while mommy and daddy Obama hit 10 inaugural balls.

Our fave brotherly trio, who kick off their tour on June 20 in Dallas, also talked dating, South Park, college plans and…Elvis Costello?

On Dating: "We've got a lot going on in our lives, and I think for us, we're focused on that," Nick said. "And we keep a little time for dating, but for the most part we're focused on working on the TV show—we just finished that—and now with this new tour. We're really trying to connect with our fans. They're the most important thing in the world to us."

On South Park: They insist they didn't get to see the recent parody, but they don't mind some good-natured ribbing. "I think we always like that we can make fun of ourselves, and we'll be the first to say that was kind of fun," Kevin said.

On College Plans: Nick isn't even a high school graduate yet, but he's already got college on the brain. "I've always talked about going to school at Northwestern," he said.

On Acting: Sure, they've rocked the music world, but the trio is hoping for more screen time. "More than anything, I think each of us has really gotten into the acting thing over the last six months with the TV show," Kevin said, adding, "We hope that it will be a great future for all of us."

On New Music: "The songs on the new album are all about things that we've really gone through," Nick said. "Personal experience is where we get all our inspiration from. But also, we've been working on trying to use metaphors to mask a literal thing that happened to us. Elvis Costello did that, and (we've been) listening to his music and trying to imitate that."

Kanye West Charged for LAX Pap Smear
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – We're guessing Kanye West and his hired guns will be doing everything to keep him out of L.A. County's version of love lockdown.

The hitmaker was charged today with three criminal misdemeanors in connection with his arrest last September following a run-in with a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport.

The city attorney charged the 31-year-old rapperwith one count each of vandalism, battery and grand theft after breaking the camera of a shutterbug as he made his way through LAX's Terminal Four on Sept. 11. West's business manager, Don Crawley, 33, faces two counts each of the same charges.

West was preparing to board a flight bound for Honolulu that morning when he was confronted by a two-man crew that continued to hound him on his way to the TSA checkpoint.

In the ensuing scrum, West allegedly grabbed something off the video camera wielded by one of the men and throwing it to the ground. Prosecutors claim Crawley forcibly wrestled away a still camera, valued at $10,000, and smashed it .

West and Crawley were detained, booked on suspicion of felony vandalism and made a later flight to Hawaii. (And despite his promise of ranting about his side of the incident, West was strangely silent on his blog—presumably at the behest of his lawyer, Blair Berk.)

If convicted of the charges, the Graduation star could face a maximum of two and a half years in jail while his manager could get up to five years.

Berk declined to comment. An arraignment is scheduled for April 14.

Fred Durst & Miley Cyrus: Suck It, Bullies!
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – What do Fred Durst and Miley Cyrus have in common?

The two were bullied in school.

"I got beat up all the time in high school," Durst admitted to us last night the L.A. premiere of his feature filmdirectorial debut, The Education of Charlie Banks. "I was the underdog. All of my angst comes from that in my life."

And this movie hits close to home.

Jesse Eisenberg stars as a college student who finds himself face-to-face with his high school bully (Jason Ritter) when he unexpectedly shows up on campus.

Cyrus recently revealed in her new autobiography, Miles to Go, that she was tormented by real-life mean girls in sixth grade who stole her books and locked her in the school bathroom.

Durst says bullying was actually one of the reasons that Limp Bizkit split up.

Really?

"The irony is, Limp Bizkit, for a while, [was] the fuel for bullies to beat up a lot of these underdogs," Durst explained. "That's when I decided to stop. I was like, 'You know, that's me they're beating up, and my music is fueling them.' So I held back for a while."

But, just last month, Limp Bizkit announced they were reuniting with a world tour kicking off in May.

"It's better than ever," Durst said of the reunion. "We own Limp Bizkit. Not a damn thing is changing! We are the same and we are gonna kill it!"

Another 'American Idol' contestant booted (AP)

Another American Idol contestant booted
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – There was no saving Alexis Grace on "American Idol."

The show's four judges unanimously decided not to keep the soulful 21-year-old single mother from Memphis, Tenn., from being eliminated on the Fox singing competition after she received the least number of viewer voters Wednesday. The panel first teased they might veto her dismissal, but after a final performance, Simon Cowell told her it wasn't good enough.

"I wish I could've done better," she said after her ouster. "But, you know, things happen for a reason."

Introduced last week, the judges now have a one-time-only opportunity to save a singer from being eliminated until the top five finalists are selected. If the panel unanimously agrees, no contestants will be eliminated that week, but two crooners will be out the next week. As the judges deliberated her fate, Grace sang — her voice cracking — one last time.

"It was good, but it wasn't good enough," said Cowell. "Sorry. It's the end of the line I'm afraid."

Grace disappointed the judges on Tuesday's Grand Ole Opry-themed performance show with a subdued rendition of Dolly Parton's "Jolene." Kara DioGuardi told the pink-streaked crooner she "lost her edge." Joining Grace as the bottom three voter-getters this week were 16-year-old high school student Allison Iraheta and 27-year-old oil rig worker Michael Sarver.

"I'm gonna cry like a frickin' baby," Sarver exclaimed after he learned he was safe.

The 11 finalists remaining in the competition are Sarver, Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Corkrey and Scott MacIntyre.

On next Wednesday's performance show, the top 10 finalists will perform Motown tunes. Then, on next Thursday's result show, another finalist will be sent packing — or possibly rescued.

88-Keys tries following Kanye's path (AP)

88-Keys tries following Kanyes path
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Producer lends beats to seminal hip-hop album, then tries the solo route.

Kanye West faced long odds when he did it five years ago, turning from Jay-Z's "The Blueprint" to his own "The College Dropout." Now longtime friend 88-Keys is trying to walk in West's shoes — with a little boost from West himself.

The New York-based musician, whose real name is Charles Njapa, was in Los Angeles recently to meet with West. At the video shoot for their humorous single, "Stay Up (Viagra)," both men donned prosthetics makeup to make them appear in their 80s, then drove around the city in a limo with video vixens.

They looked ridiculous, but that's the point. Keys says he's trying to bring a sense of lighthearted fun to a genre that can get bogged down in negativity. And West seemed ready for something silly after the serious themes of his last album, "808s & Heartbreak."

"What's so dope about jokes in raps is like you can tell super-duper unfunny jokes, but if you put a rhyme with it, it's like cool," West noted as makeup artists began the aging process. "But it's not a joke that works in really real life."

West executive produced 88-Keys' album, "The Death of Adam," released late last year on independent label Decon Records. It blends various genres to tell the story of a womanizing man who meets his demise.

Keys kept his voice mostly off the original version of the album, which also features Bilal, Redman and others. But West pushed his friend to place himself in the spotlight.

"I liked his raps, what he was busting was mad original," West said of 88-Keys. "I was like wow, this is like really dope and is musical and has concepts and all that, so I wanted to be down with it."

Keys sees the album as a second chance of sorts. He worked with Mos Def on two seminal hip-hop albums from the late 1990s (and it was Mos that introduced Keys to West), but then found himself treading water in the music industry.

"To put it bluntly, and truthfully, I kind of fell off in the industry," Keys said. "I felt like I was doing a lot of shucking and jiving, trying to chase other peoples' coattails. I was like 'You know what, I know one person who I can make beats for, or who I can submit beats to, and I won't get turned down.' 88-Keys! This guy, right here."

He's a bit of a throwback, a married father of two and writes about his latest industry exploits at a blog titled "I Heart My Polo Lifestyle," a reference to the Ralph Lauren Polo gear that he's worn daily for over 15 years.

The question is whether the critical and commercial success of another fashion fan, West, has opened the door for big-selling debut albums from alternative hip-hop artists like Keys and the likes of KiD CuDi, Wale, Charles Hamilton and Asher Roth.

Keys said that at the very least, they can learn from West's legendary confidence.

"I've been to meetings where, when he used to shop his own demo and he would play people 'Jesus Walks.'" Keys said. "Just like a lot of hits that he made on his first album, A&R reps were like 'Oh man, we love that beat. I think that would sound good for DMX.' And he was just like 'Naw, this is my music, my album.' He put his heart and soul into it. So I took a lot of cues from him as far as like knowing what I had, and my potential. ... And here I am today."

Heath Ledger's music videos come to light (Reuters)

Heath Ledgers music videos come to light
(Reuters)

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Two music videos that represent actor Heath Ledger's last directorial work before his death in January 2008 will be released this year.

Modest Mouse plans to release the animated video for "King Rat," a bonus track from the band's 2007 "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank," Billboard has confirmed. The news was first reported by Spin magazine on its Web site. A video for Grace Woodroofe's cover of David Bowie's "Quicksand" is also set for release this year, along with her Ben Harper-produced debut album, the L.A. Weekly reports.

The Oscar-winning actor directed "King Rat" for Modest Mouse after meeting singer Isaac Brock in Australia.

"Heath and I have a mutual friend, and when we were in Australia, my fiance and some of us in the band went out on a boat with him and his family and friends and talked about the idea," Brock told VH1 in a 2007 interview. "The idea sort of dropped, but then he just sent me an email saying that he wanted to do it."

The video is animated by director and illustrator Daniel Auber, a member of Ledger's art collective the Massive.

Modest Mouse wrapped its most recent tour last weekend in New York at Terminal 5. The band will perform the song "Satellite Skin" on "Late Show With David Letterman" on Wednesday (March 18).

DJ AM seeks million for plane crash damages
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – DJ AM is seeking $20 million in damages related to a plane crash in South Carolina last year that killed four others.

The celebrity disc jockey, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, is suing the plane's manufacturer, Learjet, and several other companies.

Goldstein is seeking $10 million for medical expenses, lost earnings, profits and economic damages and another $10 million related to non-economic losses, such as mental and physical pain, according to a document filed Friday.

A jury will decide any damage award if the case goes to trial.

Several of the companies sued last year by Goldstein and fellow crash survivor Travis Barker are seeking a trial delay until after a government investigation of the Sept. 19 crash is complete.

A lawyer for Learjet did not immediately return a phone message on Monday afternoon.

Radioheads Thom Yorke Schools Miley Cyrus & Kanye West on Humility
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – When Radiohead refused to meet Miley Cyrus and Kanye West at the Grammy Awards last month, the starlet threatened to "ruin" them and the rapper refused to stand for their performance. Now the In Rainbows band is fighting back.

Cyrus kicked off the feudin' during an appearance on the Johnjay and Rich radio show and rambled on for more than six minutes about how the band dissed her after she begged her manager to set up an introduction.

"I'm like, these are the people I really want to meet," she said. "I'd freak out. They're my rock gods. These are the only people that I would cry over…My manager asked and said, 'Miley's really obsessed. And they were like, 'We don't really do that.' "

She continued on in disbelief about the Thom Yorke band's lack of interest in meeting the Hannah Montana, admitting she was so disappointed about the diss, she left the show early.

"I left 'cause I was so upset," she said. "I wasn't going to watch. Stinkin' Radiohead! I'm gonna ruin them, I'm going to tell everyone."

The three-time Grammy winners responded by putting the teen in her place…

"When Miley grows up, she'll learn not to have such a sense of entitlement," the quintet said in a statement.

But the Radiohead beef buck doesn't stop there.

During the taping for his episode of VH1's Storytellers, West complained that Yorke snubbed him as well.

"When he performed at the Grammys, I sat the f--k down," the rapper said.

The British "Creep" singer, already in full retaliation mode, concluded a blog post on the band's website with a wink and a nudge to both stars. "Wish us all a safe journey if you still like us and you're not one of those people I have managed to offend by doing nothing," Yorke writes.

Bring on the next round in these wars of words ('cause you know they're coming)!

Placido Domingo puts musical spin on pope's poems (AP)

Placido Domingo puts musical spin on popes poems
(AP)

NEW YORK – When Placido Domingo and his son, Placido Domingo Jr., set about to put the poems of the late Pope John Paul II to music, they discovered several religious passages, already translated from his native Polish to Italian, that would have made beautiful songs.

But sometime after the pontiff's words were set to music, the legendary tenor had a change of heart — and decided the focus should be more universal instead of steeped in Catholicism.

"I said, 'This is fine, this is beautiful. ... Maybe one day we should record this,'" he said in an interview. "But ... this pope has been very much loved and admired by everybody, so there should exist other songs. So we found all this new material, so we found a lot of different themes."

The result is Domingo's "Amore Infinito," released this week, an album filled with songs about nature, the power of love, freedom, and even motherhood — all inspired by the pen of Karol Wojtyla, who would become Pope John Paul II in 1979. He remained pope until his death in 2005.

Domingo had met him a few times during his papacy, the last time being shortly before Wojtyla's death, whereupon the pope thanked him for a prior performance for which he was too ill to attend.

"When he was thanking me, I said, 'Holiness, I know that you have wrote a lot more poems, so I would like it very much that we would put music to some of them, and record them,'" the Italian great said. "He told me, 'Oh, that would be wonderful,' so in a way, he approve it."

Domingo worked with his son, Placido Domingo Jr., in helping find the right poems to set to music, and Domingo Jr. wrote or co-wrote the music to three of the album's 12 songs. His son also produced the CD, which features Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Vanessa Williams and Katherine Jenkins.

John Paul published poems, plays and philosophical essays before he became pope. Domingo said the poems used on "Amore Infinito" help underscore his humanity.

"Before he arrived to the church he was a sportsman ... he was an actor, he was a writer, he was a poet," Domingo said. "This is something for everybody. His poems, they are for every human being. It has nothing to do really with the Catholic (church)."

Besides paying tribute to the late pope, the album also gave the two Domingos a chance to work together, and even inspired Placido Domingo Jr., who sings with his father and a children's choir on the first song, "Love," to start working on an album of his own.

The younger Domingo called his foray into the singing world "inevitable." But he also said fans should not expect to hear another Domingo: his CD will be more crossover, and besides, he says he doesn't have his father's famous voice.

"If they think I am going to sound like him," he laughed, "they're going to be pretty disappointed!"

Defense rests in Phil Spector murder retrial (AP)

Defense rests in Phil Spector murder retrial
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Phil Spector's defense attorney rested his case Thursday in the music producer's murder retrial involving the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson.

Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler advised Spector of his right to testify, but he chose not to take the stand in his own defense.

Attorney Doron Weinberg concluded with testimony from forensic psychologist Elizabeth Loftus, an expert in memory and witness testimony. Her opinions were presented to cast doubt on the prosecution's star witness, a chauffeur who said he heard Spector say he thought he had killed somebody.

Spector, the eccentric music legend renowned for his "Wall of Sound" recording technique, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Clarkson, who became a 1980s cult figure through her starring role in the film "Barbarian Queen."

She died of a gunshot fired into her mouth while seated in the foyer of Spector's home in 2003. The defense has contended Clarkson was suicidal and killed herself. The prosecution maintains that Spector killed her.

Loftus, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, and author of 22 books on human memory, witness testimony and repressed memory, told jurors that witness observations can be influenced by stress, lighting and time. She also said accuracy depends on whether distractions divert the person's attention.

"Memory does not work like a videotape recorder," she said, noting that individuals sometimes change their descriptions inadvertently because of information they receive after the event.

During cross-examination, prosecutor Alan Jackson suggested that Loftus was "to a certain degree, a professional defense witness." She acknowledged she has rarely been asked to testify by prosecutors.

She also acknowledged that witnesses who were confident of their accounts "are slightly more likely to be right than those who aren't."

The chauffeur had expressed confidence in his observations when he testified.

After the defense rested, prosecutors began their rebuttal case. The judge told jurors that testimony in the trial would conclude next week. The retrial recessed until Monday.

In Spector's first trial, the jury deadlocked 10-2 with the majority favoring conviction. The second trial began in October.

Phish lands another keeper in reunion (AP)

Phish lands another keeper in reunion
(AP)

HAMPTON, Va. – Phish caught another keeper at the Hampton Coliseum when it mattered most, blasting a five-year breakup into the past with a crisp, focused show that proved the Vermont foursome is refreshed and ready for the road again.

To be fair, this wasn't the fearless or flawless Phish of the 1990s pre-breakup heyday. But on a Friday night that buzzed and crackled with anticipation, their missteps were few, the jamming was spirited and the mood on stage mostly playful and loose — a far cry from the emotional and musical shambles of their "farewell" show some five years prior.

They opened by nailing the hairpin transitions and turbulent passages of their most challenging material: the old stuff. "Fluffhead," an ecstatic prog-rocker and major crowd pleaser, kicked things off by staking a claim deep within the vast Phish songbook; they held that hallowed ground in the first set with "Divided Sky" and "David Bowie," also from their 1989 debut album "Junta."

But a most encouraging sign was that Phish clearly aims to keep innovating: an a capella "jam" that typically launches from the end of "You Enjoy Myself" (another "Junta" track) was one of the most such vocal segues the band's ever concocted. The odd meshing of mouth-sounds, beatboxing and caterwauling has historically been a thing of throwaway whimsy; on Friday, it quickly developed into a nighmarish wall of what came to sound like deep, spooky electronica gone wickedly wrong.

They also rejiggered the happy-go-lucky "Water in the Sky," changing it from astral bluegrass into an earthier, more dance-friendly shuffle, and debuted the heavy caliber rocker "Backwards Down the Number Line," a strong candidate for inclusion on their upcoming album.

Trey Anastasio's guitar work was on point for most of the longer-than-usual first set, and he recovered quickly on the rare occasions when he did slip out of a complex beat, as happened a couple of times on the twisty turns of a warp-speed "Rift." When he did get to the shrieking high notes, he charged in with all the vigor of a guitarist who has no doubt of his abilities.

Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, keyboardist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman are playing three shows in Hampton, the UFO-looking arena that's often been considered a home court of sorts for Phish, who consistently turn out sterling performances here.

Friday's was their first show since an amicable split that turned out to be more burnout therapy than the end to their 20-year run on the road. They shrugged or laughed off minor flubs and moments of rustiness that, in the past, might have thrown them into a set-long funk of sloppy indifference.

Instead, Phish kept on moving like a tremendous machine through its two-decade song catalog, touching on material from at least eight albums and throwing in quite a few live favorites that never found a home on one, from the euphoria of "Harry Hood" to the mountain romp "Possum."

Maybe Phish will never eclipse their universally accepted musical zenith — a set of marathon shows in the Florida Everglades on New Year's Eve 1999 that was such a high, even the band has acknowledged it had a deflating effect on all future performances.

But if Friday's fiery, fully committed set is any indication, they sure are going to try.

American Idol Does Michael Jackson. Will He Reciprocate?
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – When American Idol's newly minted Top 13 take the stage on Tuesday, they'll be performing songs by a former American idol.

No, not Kelly Clarkson—although she'll be performing on Wednesday's show along with Kanye West.

The thrilling 13 will get to take on Michael Jackson's songbook, E! News confirms. Of course, this isn't the King of Pop's first reference on the reality juggernaut. Most Idol fans will remember David Cook's stripped-down rendition of "Billie Jean."

Finalist Matt Giraud teased us about next week's theme last night at the AI party at Area nightclub in Los Angeles. "I think that Michael Jackson theme night is coming up, so I'm excited about that," he said. "I love the Jackson 5 stuff too, but I'm not sure what song to sing yet."

As far as the Gloved One—who announced on Thursday that he'll do his last 10 concerts in London in July—making an appearance on the show, Fox reps claim it's a no-go. However, with Jackson, you never really know.

Eminem Pins Down Relapse Release Date
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – The real Slim Shady is not only standing up, he's coming back. And, most important, setting a date for his ever-elusive resurgence.

Eminem has at long last pinned down May 19 for the release of Relapse, his first new studio album in more than four years.

As the announcement has been such a long time coming for loyal fans—the album was first announced last fall and originally slated for release by Christmas of last year—Eminem is offering up a double dose of good news for his long-suffering music minions, confirming recent reports that Relapse will be quickly followed by another new album, the aptly if rather unimaginatively titled Relapse 2.

"A lot of people were expecting Relapse to drop last year," Eminem said. "I was one of them."

"Then Dre and I went back in the studio in September for a few days, and that turned into six months," he said of his album's delay.

"We were on such a roll; we wound up with a ton of new music produced by Dre. Putting out Relapse 2 will let everyone get all of the best stuff."

That album is currently without a firm release date, but is due out by the end of the year.

In the meantime, Eminem and regular cohorts Dr. Dre and 50 Cent—who did his part to hurry the album's release by pledging not to release any solo material until his mentor had secured a release—joined lyrical forces last month on "Crack a Bottle," the debut single off Eminem's forthcoming album.

The track, unsurprisingly, shot to the top of the Billboard singles charts. As if Eminem would settle for anything less.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – The bunny hop is coming to Dancing With the Stars.

Sources confirm that Girl Next DoorHolly Madison will replace Jewel in the new season of ABC's hit reality competition show.

I'm told that the Jewel-Madison switcheroo happened pretty quickly, too.

Madison agreed to join the celeb dance-off on Monday, and by yesterday she was already rehearsing at an L.A. studio with partner Dmitry Chaplin.

Although Jewel insisted that a case of tendinitis in her knees would not sideline her, doctors have apparently told the songbird to hang up her dancing shoes.

Reps for Madison, Jewel and ABC declined to comment.

The gig could be just the thing for Madison right now to help get her mind off of ex-boyfriend Criss Angel.

She and the Mindfreak showman split in late February. Madison had spent most of the last four months in Las Vegas to be by his side, but she returned to L.A. late last month as a single woman.

Michael Jackson sues auction house for sale plans (AP)

Michael Jackson sues auction house for sale plans
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson sued an auction house Wednesday to halt the scheduled sale of thousands of his personal possessions, an action the firm says caught it completely off-guard.

The King of Pop's company, MJJ Productions, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday against Julien's Auction House. It claims founder Darren Julien promised to send Jackson an inventory of sale items, but that the singer hasn't given permission to move them all.

The suit claims many of the items are "priceless and irreplaceable" and describes the attempt to sell them as "malicious, fraudulent, extreme, outrageous and without any legal justification whatsoever."

Julien said Wednesday night that the lawsuit was a "total surprise to us, because Jackson had been apprised of everything since the day we started. His manager ... has approved everything."

In December, Julien's company announced it would administer a five-day auction in April featuring more than 2,000 of Jackson's personal items, including his American Music Award for "Thriller," a velvet cape given to him by his children for Father's Day in 1998, a pair of rhinestone-trimmed socks from 1981 and a basketball signed by Michael Jordan.

Platinum and gold records, a customized Harley Davidson, a Rolls Royce limousine and his own original artwork were also set for sale, according to the original announcement.

MJJ Productions authorized the auction house to remove the items from Jackson's Neverland Ranch, according to court documents, but not to sell them without Jackson's permission.

"There was no other intention when we picked up the items" but to put them up for sale, Julien said. He said that Jackson's camp had since requested some items be returned, which the firm honored.

"Up until two days ago we were working with his managers," including final details such as a date for the catalog to be ready and signed, he added.

Julien, who is in Ireland on a promotional trip and had not been served with the lawsuit, said he would be getting in touch with the Jackson camp before deciding what to do next.

American Idol selects 3 more finalists
(AP)

LOS ANGELES – The drama is over for Nathaniel Marshall and Kristen McNamara on "American Idol."

The pair of singers who sparred with their group during Hollywood Week were two of nine semifinalists sent packing Wednesday on the popular Fox singing competition — and they weren't selected to return for the special wild card round, either.

The third group of three finalists headed to the top 12: Lil Rounds, the smooth 23-year-old mother of three from Memphis, Tenn.; Scott MacIntyre, the soulful 23-year-old piano player from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jorge Nunez, the charming 20-year-old college student from Carolina, Puerto Rico. The trio received the most viewer votes Tuesday.

The show's four judges seemed in agreement with the viewer votes this week. They apparently didn't want to be without Rounds, who received the biggest endorsement after singing Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You." The panel also lauded MacIntyre and Nunez, who broke into tears Tuesday after his rendition of Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me."

"You're born to sing," said Kara DioGuardi. "What you have comes from the heart."

At the end of the show, the judges also announced the semifinalists who will get a second shot at the top 12.

Von Smith, Jasmine Murray, Ricky Braddy, Megan Corkrey, Tatiana Del Toro, Matt Giraud, Jesse Langseth and Anoop Desai will return to the stage for the wild card round Thursday. The judges will pick the final three finalists from that group.

"Thank you so much. Thank you so much," said a weeping Del Toro. "I want this so much. This means so much to me."

Nunez, MacIntyre and Rounds join previously picked finalists Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver. The show's dozen finalists will be known Thursday after the wild card round.

Beginning next week, the finalists start competing — with one singer sent packing each Wednesday.

Drew Barrymore to Direct Third Twilight?
(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Drew Barrymore knows a thing or two about extraterrestrials, so vampires shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

The E.T. actress is in talks to direct Eclipse, the third entry in the Twilight franchise.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Barrymore is among the top choices to follow in the footsteps of Catherine Hardwicke, who helmed Twilight, and Chris Weitz, who's about to start filming the first sequel, New Moon.

Hardwicke opted out of the franchise because she felt she didn't have enough breathing room to do the follow-up justice. And because of producer Summit Entertainment's tight release schedule—New Moon is set for a Nov. 20, 2009, release and Eclipse just six months later, on June 30, 2010—Weitz will be in post-production on New Moon while Eclipse is filming.

Barrymore has just wrapped her feature-directing debut with Whip It!, starring Ellen Page.

A rep for Barrymore declined to comment on the report.

Meanwhile, in the day's other big movie news:

• Eddie Murphy is attached to star as his idol, Richard Pryor, in a new biopic being written and directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls). Murphy is reportedly taking a big paycut for the potentially Oscar-bait project, according to Entertainment Weekly.

• Antonio Banderas has been wooed for Woody Allen's next project, per Variety, joining an all-star ensemble that includes Slumdog Millionaire's Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. As usual, the Oscar-winning auteur is keeping a tight lid on the plot of the untitled flick, which starts shooting this summer in London.

• Returning to his stand-up roots for the first time in seven years, Robin Williams will do a brief five-night residency at Broadway's Neil Simon Theater April 28-May 3 as part of his latest solo show, Weapons of Self-Destruction. The funnyman kicked off an 80-city trek earlier this month in Santa Barbara, Calif.

• Per the Hollywood Reporter, Seth Green has signed on to star in Disney's Mars Needs Moms, the Robert Zemeckis-produced CGI adaptation of Berkeley Breathed's children's book about a boy who stows away aboard a UFO to save his mom (Joan Cusack) from a bunch of ETs. Dan Fogler and Mindy Sterling costar.

• Chris O'Donnell coming aboard CBS' NCIS spin-off opposite LL Cool J. The actor will play Callen, the troubled, mysterious lead agent of a squad of naval investigators whose reputation for undercover work is impeccable. The show debuts later this season as a two-hour special.
