The group's "Sino" album also was nominated as best alternative album. Its single, "Volver a Comenzar," was nominated as record of the year and best alternative song.
"We received this news with great joy," singer Ruben Albarran, said in Mexico. "The truth is we feel grateful that after so many years of work they keep giving us space, and that our work or better said, our passion keeps receiving attention because in reality ... we enjoy this so much that is hard to call it work."
Earning five nominations was Colombian rocker Juanes, including his "La Vida ... Es Un Ratico" as album of the year and best male pop album. Puerto Rican pop singer Kanny Garcia, a relative newcomer, received four nominations, including album of the year and best female pop album for "Cualquier Dia."
"I feel very glad and very happy this morning", Garcia said moments after the announcement. "I am really surprised. ... With a first album one only hopes to get one's music to the audience. This has been a huge satisfaction for me."
Gustavo Santaolalla, the Argentine composer and musician-turned-producer, earned five nominations. Four of those came for his work as a producer for Cafe Tacuba and Juanes and their nominations in the Album and Record of the Year categories.
"Recognition is always nice, especially by your colleagues, the people who are part of the music community," Santaolalla said. "I'm really happy to be associated with artists such as Juanes, such as Café Tacvba, Bajofondo, and I'm proud as a Latino to be part of the Academy and to celebrate all the artists and kinds of Latin music."
The Latin Grammys will be held in Houston Nov. 13.
