HAVANA – Actor Benicio del Toro says he admires Ernesto Guevara but the revolutionary icon he plays in the recent film biography "Che" would not need to resort to armed struggle if he were alive today.
Del Toro told a news conference Sunday at the Latin American Film Festival in Havana that he respects the Argentine-born Guevara as a "man of consequence," but personally opposes armed struggle.
He said revolutionaries can use elections and other nonviolent methods to promote change in an era when a black man can be elected president of the United States.
Del Toro said Guevara would be "a different Che" today.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, "Che" screened Saturday night at the Havana festival.
